Blood Tests at Hamat: Fasting, Results and What to Bring

Blood tests are one of the most useful tools your doctor has. Our licensed laboratory in Membley works around the clock — walk in at any hour or book a visit — and most routine results are ready during the same visit — sent straight to your clinician so treatment can start without delay.

Do I need to fast?

Most blood tests need no preparation at all. A few do:

  • Fasting blood sugar — nothing to eat for at least 8 hours beforehand (an overnight fast is easiest), and only plain water to drink: no tea, coffee, juice, soda or chewing gum.
  • Cholesterol (lipid) profile — most people no longer need to fast for this test, but your doctor may still ask you to fast for 8 to 12 hours in some cases. Follow the instructions on your request form.

While fasting, plain water is fine and makes the blood draw easier. Keep taking your usual medicines unless your doctor tells you otherwise — and if you have diabetes, ask your clinician how to manage your medicines while fasting. If you use insulin or diabetes tablets, come early in the morning, bring something sugary and a snack for straight after your test, and tell our staff when you arrive. Not sure whether your test needs fasting? Call +254 721 600700 or message us on WhatsApp before you come.

Stop fasting and get help if you feel shaky, sweaty, confused, very weak or faint while waiting — especially if you have diabetes. Eat or drink something sugary straight away and tell a member of our team; your safety comes first, and the test can be done another day.

What to bring

  • The request form or note from your doctor, if you have one.
  • Your national ID, and your SHA (Social Health Authority) or private insurance card if you are using cover.
  • A list of the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. Some can affect results — for example biotin, found in many hair, skin and nail supplements, can interfere with some thyroid and heart tests.

How long do results take?

Most routine tests — such as blood counts and blood sugar — are ready during the same visit. Some specialised tests take longer; our lab team will tell you when to expect them. Results go directly to your clinician, who will explain what they mean for you.

Tests we commonly run

  • Haematology — blood counts that check for infection, anaemia and more.
  • Biochemistry — including blood sugar and other tests of how your body is working.
  • Microbiology and serology — tests that identify infections.
  • Hormone profiles, diabetes screening and pre-employment medical tests.

Tips for an easier blood test

  • Drink water beforehand — being well hydrated makes veins easier to find.
  • Wear a top with sleeves that roll up easily.
  • If you have fainted during a blood test before, tell the person taking your blood before they start, so they can help you stay safe and comfortable.
